Andrew Scott began work in early 2021 on the expansion of a large-scale commercial production plant in South Wales. South Wales-based construction firm, Andrew Scott Ltd, drove this ambitious project forward with the use of IPM Group’s, access control innovation, the inteliPod, ensuring safe operations throughout the project despite the covid-19 pandemic.
The project
A large European manufacturer recently invested in a state-of-the-art expansion of their existing South Wales production site. With the planned investment, soaring demand from the UK consumer market could be met, with a plan to double production capacity of the existing site. Moreover, the expansion is set to create a significant number of jobs within the region, bolstering the local economy.
Work began in February 2021 during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, presenting significant challenges to both this project and the construction sector as a whole. The team at Andrew Scott Ltd reached out to the highly regarded leaders in the field of access control, IPM Group. Interested in utilising the most recent development in their access control range, inteliPod. A state-of-the-art innovation in access control a touchless, fully automated and self-contained access control unit. Principally designed for smarter, faster, and safer access control solutions across the construction sector.
Safe operation and compliance with SOP’s
In 2021, businesses in every industry faced unexpected challenges. Whilst several industries thrived during these difficult times, others suffered trade restrictions, drastic drops in demand, and reduced availability of goods, services, and workers. The Covid-19 pandemic presented significant challenges globally for the construction sector. Therefore, in a landmark project such as this, it was key to get back on track, safely & efficiently.
Enlisting the use of the inteliPod access control unit enabled Andrew Scott Ltd to continue working during Covid-19, ensuring safe operations for their workforce, subcontractors, and clients.
Whilst the industry took steps to make sites Covid safe, transmissions continued to rise outside the workplace. Whilst self-isolation rules were preventing staff from attending work, staff shortages were rife, putting production at risk and constantly undermining the sector’s recovery.
The inteliPod offered a solution, a safe point for staff to access the workplace all whilst deterring the possibility of spreading infection, through facial recognition, temperature scanning and self sanitisation. Offering complete compliance with all Standard Operating Procedures and government guidance at the time.
Forward-thinking organisation increasing efficiency through implementation of new technology
This project was certainly a step in the right direction for the construction sector, which has traditionally been slow to adopt new technology. Andrew Scott Ltd are a forward-looking organisation, utilising the inteliPod within this project to both increase on-site efficiency and help meet the increased consumer demand in the UK market.
With Covid-19 restrictions being lifted and cases dramatically on the rise, many businesses are on the verge of shutting due to what is being labeled the Ping Pandemic or “Pingdemic”.
Some 530,126 alerts telling people to self-isolate were sent in the week to 7 July, a 46% rise on the previous week. Cases have increased 32.6% over the last week and the UK has recorded another 48,553 daily coronavirus cases. Factories have been on the verge of shutting and that at some sites hundreds of staff are off work. Although, this ‘pingdemic’ affects all businesses across a range of sectors in the UK economy. From Supermarkets and Hospitality to the Construction industry. Businesses must now navigate their way through the lifting of restrictions, both safely and efficiently.
This week alone, Iceland bosses have said they have had to shut shops due to staff shortages caused by people being forced to self-isolate by the NHS Covid app. Iceland said that after keeping all its stores open during lockdown, it has now had to shut some because 1,000 staff have been “pinged” by the app. Furthermore, in both the civil engineering and construction sector, construction leaders are warning that supply chain shortages are being exacerbated by the NHS Covid app ‘pingdemic’. Additionally, labour shortages that have remained prevalent within the construction industry since the first lockdown are now being exacerbated. These labour shortages are being intensified by the growing number of non-symptomatic drivers, tradespeople, merchants, and manufacturing staff required to self-isolate after coming into contact with someone who tested positive for Covid-19. This will further stretch the supply chain.
Has Your Workforce been Hit by the Pingdemic?
With the UK workforce situation deteriorating further, construction sites will soon have to cease work and companies will be forced to start shutting down construction sites altogether. The industry has taken steps to make premises Covid safe, but with transmissions rising outside the workplace, and self-isolation rules preventing staff from working, staff shortages are putting production at risk and undermining the sector’s recovery.
At IPM Group we believe the solution to making a workplace Covid safe and reduce the risk of Covid induced workforce absenteeism, is smarter access control. Our access control innovation, the inteliPod offers a safe point for your staff to access the workplace, whilst deterring the possibility of spreading infection, through facial recognition, temperature scanning and self sanitisation.
Let us walk through the features the inteliPod possesses which allow it to create a Covid secure workplace.
Firstly, the inteliPods unit’s facial recognition technology. This offers faster access, is completely touch-free with the enhanced security features utilised by the inteliPod that supersede biometrics and ensure only authorised personnel access your site. Features such as the inteliPods facial recognition technology that has the capability to recognise users whilst still wearing their face covering. Furthermore, for those sites requiring personnel to wear face masks, our system can be set to raise an alarm for anyone trying to enter who is not wearing a face mask.
Additionally, within the facial recognition reader itself, the inteliPod possesses temperature scanning capabilities. Users are scanned upon arrival, granted entry if they are of a safe temperature or denied if their temperature is over what is deemed safe. This nullifies the risk of contaminating the entry point. It also quashes the need for Covid Marshalls, Commercial cleaners and/or Security personnel.
Finally, the inteliPods self sanitisation feature. For the unit to remain touch-free, we installed self-sanitisation technology. This is to sanitise the unit following a refusal of entry due to an unsafe temperature whilst also reducing the risk of contaminated surfaces from commercial cleaning personnel.
The inteliPods capabilities are applicable across of a range of sectors, from construction to manufacturing. It was designed first and foremost to keep people safe, whilst also allowing businesses to continue to strive to recover following months of closure. Covid-19 is here indefinitely yet we must resume life as normal, for the sake of both the economic development and individuals’ members of society’s personal finances. With the Government stating there will be no more national lockdowns going forward, the inteliPod unit is the best solution to safeguarding your staff and business.

Last December, BAM Nuttall began work on a significant infrastructure development for Norfolk County Council. The project is one of Norfolk County Council’s most significant infrastructure ventures in recent years and will integrate with several other local development projects set to transform the town of Great Yarmouth. BAM Nuttall was due to begin work on Great Yarmouth’s third river crossing to transform the town of Great Yarmouth during the midst of a third national lockdown. The lockdown presented significant logistical challenges to operate a large site safely and securely.
In order to maintain progress and reach the estimated completed date of 2023. BAM Nuttall reached out us at IPM Group, interested in our most recent development, the inteliPod. An innovation in access control, touchless, fully automated, self-contained access control unit. The inteliPod is designed for smarter, faster, and safer access control solutions across the construction sector.
For this project, we supplied BAM Nuttall with an inteliPod unit, managed by our Virtual Management Solution (VMS) Team. Our state-of-the-art VMS facility allowed BAM Nuttall to manage physical surveillance tasks remotely from our Head Office-based Control Centre, reducing the need and cost for onsite security personnel. Therefore, eradicating the use for a front-of-house guard. Using this additional feature of the inteliPod, saved BAM Nuttall £45k per year on access control and security whilst providing BAM Nuttall with 24/7 365 days a year support and real-time data.
General Foreman, Ian Walker had this to say about the involvement of the inteliPod in this landmark project.
“The Covid-19 pandemic was a big concern for my project and as the 3rd lockdown had just been introduced, we were looking at ways to both protect our workforce and to keep the contract running as best as we could, the scheme is to build a new bridge, contract value of £65m.
As soon as the unit was delivered, I thought that it was a great idea, no points of hand contact, temperature taken before allowing access to site and also the unit had other uses, checking CSCS and CPCS accreditation, warning of insufficient first aiders or fire marshals on site etc.
The guys at inteliPod assisted us in getting everyone on our site on the system, as normal people on site resisted at first as any change on a construction site is difficult to manage but once the site operatives could see that the concept worked things settled down.
I would highly recommend the inteliPod to any construction site.”
IPM Group are thrilled to be involved with the construction of Great Yarmouth’s Third River Crossing Bridge. Projects like this are more important than ever now as we seek to help the U. K’s economy recover from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

The site management team will then take the necessary actions, working with the IPM Group Mobile Patrol, Response Services, and the Emergency Services.
At IPM Group, we can manage all of your business admin and logistical issues from our state-of-the-art monitoring station, with services ranging from remote online pre-enrolment for staff and visitors, staff on-line inductions, worker health & safety audits and expiry, booking in deliveries, reporting, handling communications, monitoring the screening of staff, contractors and visitors and the ability to remove and/or revoke employee site access locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.
To analyse performance, site Management can select from a whole range of bespoke reports which are automated to daily, weekly, monthly frequencies. These include Time & Attendance, Co2 reporting, and provides proof of employees’ attendance and hours of work. A full interrogation of data is available to allow monitoring of staff, contractors, and suppliers.
Delivery Management Software
Efficiency and streamlining are imperative to optimised and productive site. We believe the best solution to streamline your delivery and departure processes are by tracking the schedule with a Delivery Management System (DMS). DMS is predominantly a system where contractors can log delivery bookings and departures, which can be used across many industries and sectors to manage and coordinate the entire booking and delivery process.
In addition to the IPM Group inteliPod® VMS service, we offer further streamlining through our Delivery Management System (DMS), Zone Manager. Zone Manager goes far beyond other booking systems, by being a real-time management tool used to control events as they happen, such as arrivals and departures, highlighting when unplanned activity occurs minimising wasted time rescheduling. Its in-built intelligence means that double bookings are automatically avoided.
By using a customisable and configurable delivery management system, such as Zone Manager, offers a solution to notable construction site challenges. Such as the 8 o’clock gate queues, piles of materials you do not require yet and wasted administrative time spent emailing sub-contractors.
Zone Manager is an online portal for project managers, site supervisors and contractors alike. Zone Manager improves the ability to manage deliveries to site, avoid delivery slot clashes and keep the project on course from day one, therefore, your construction team can focus on the job in hand. Our customers confirm this service saves them time and resources in employing a dedicated person or logistics contractor.
Facial Recognition Technology & Temperature Scanner
As users initially approach the inteliPod® they will be greeted with two touchless points of screening and identification. The inteliPod® utilises state-of-the-art technology to give an early warning against coronavirus and other contagious illness sufferers from entering your site. The temperature scanner and facial recognition upon arrival, nullifies the risk of contaminating the entry point. This also quashes the need for covid marshals, commercial cleaners and/or on site security personnel.
Consequently, the inteliPod® vastly improves and safety and security for construction sites and allows entry on to site by completely touchless, by utilising facial and body temperature scanning, therefore, eliminating the unwelcome practice of ‘shared’ cards, fobs, mobile phones or touch biometric units, likely to spread harmful illnesses and or viruses. The individual is assessed within one second, to ensure they are approved to enter site, that their body temperature is at a safe level and ensuring they are wearing PPE face mask.
Beating the covid mask challenge; our facial recognition technology has adapted to work regardless, and the use of a mask does not stop our system from identifying someone. Furthermore, for those sites requiring personnel to wear face masks, our system can be set to raise an alarm for anyone trying to enter who is not wearing a face mask.
Irrespective of whether the danger of COVID-19 is still present or not in the future, ill- health-related productivity loss costs the British Economy on average £92bn a year. A fully touchless site access unit presents solutions to many other illness cases that may affect your business, be it sickness bugs or the common flu, allowing your staff to continue on schedule. Furthermore, once used, the inteliPod® has an automatic, built-in sanitising misting system. The internal area will be self-cleansed at pre-determined intervals, keeping the inteliPod virus free. Perfect for high-volume footfall units and crowd control solutions.
Independent Networking
The inteliPods® versatility shines through on a range of different site sizes depending on the individual business’s requirements. On larger sites, due to its built-in independent networking technology, multiple inteliPods® can be linked together on site with existing CCTV systems to increase footfall flow and reduce tailgating. As opposed to traditional biometric turnstiles which require a customer network; therefore, the unit must be within 90 metres of the network, thus, limiting the placement of the unit. Furthermore, due to inteliPods® independent network, any worries about data integrity can be left to IPM Groups, Virtual Management System, which takes the responsibility of recording and storing data. Traditionally, sites bare the dilemma of once they have equipped conventional biometric turnstiles, they then incur the burden digitally recording and storing of all biometric data, as well as planning the security around this data.
These are just 4 examples of how inteliPod® can help construction sites both large and small increase safety and offer security solutions. To find out more about inteliPod®, and how it can help you increase productivity and peace of mind. Enquire now, speak to one of our sales representatives and get a free quote today!

For many years, IPM Group was a leading supplier of biometric turnstiles to the construction industry. Over the years, the projects came and went but the technology stayed the same. However, this all changed overnight due to the Covid-19 global pandemic. What was once seen as the industry standard was fast becoming obsolete due to the numerous health and safety risks associated with how Covid-19 was being transmitted from one person to another. This was a massive worry for the construction industry due to the high tough points and contact areas of turnstiles.
During the early stages of the pandemic, while other companies continued to supply the construction industry with now potentially unsafe turnstiles, IPM Group took a separate path. From an idea that was first conceived a few years ago, and now pushed to the forefront due to the pandemic – inteliPod was born. This state-of-the-art access control system is the world’s first 100% touch-free access control using facial recognition, with inbuilt temperature screening, anti-virus technology, time and attendance monitoring and a whole wealth of other unique features.
As inteliPod is fast becoming the new industry standard, a recent publication from the Construction Industry Federation regarding the standard operating procedures for the construction sector during the Covid-19 pandemic, highlights in great detail the significant issues associated with the use of biometric turnstiles.
“The potential for cross-contamination is higher at site entry and exit points”
A stark warning from the Construction Industry Federation that entry and exit points on site pose a much higher risk of cross-contamination. This is mainly due to the multiple touchpoints and close proximity to other people associated with sites that use standard turnstiles.
Furthermore, the guidelines also outline their recommended control measures for using biometric turnstiles, which is not great reading for any site currently using them;
“Turnstiles to be by-passed with open door access to site”
This is clearly worrying for any project that relies on turnstiles for security and access control. A by-passed turnstile is effectively redundant for access and security control. As a result, there would be a need for extra onsite security personal to manage the access process. Thus, creating a significant extra cost for the project.
“Thumb access devices should be by-passed / turned-off”
Again, with biometric turnstiles relying on fingerprint technology to grant access, this would become redundant. Which again, will cause issues for sites that rely on this technology for access control.
“Security guards to record all names rather than having multiple persons signing-in using shared pen/booklet”
Not only will this cause added expense on the project’s budget due to hiring extra security guards, but this will also slow down the process of gaining access to site, relying on manual input of data.
“Sanitising stations in position at all site entry points”
This again adds extra expense onto budgets, especially for large sites with large number of people on site the costs can soon mount up.
“Regularly clean common contact surfaces in reception, office, access control and delivery areas (e.g. scanners, turnstiles, screens, telephone handsets, desks, particularly during peak flow times)”
For many construction sites, this would mean hiring a team of dedicated cleaners to ensure the access areas are kept clean and sanitised. Again, adding a significant cost.
“Reduce the number of people in attendance at site inductions and consider holding them outdoors wherever possible”
This would fast become a logistical headache for many sites. It would also mean there would be an increased chance of people slipping through the net and not receiving the appropriate induction before entering site.
“Touchpoints should be minimised with a “handsfree” approach where possible”
This seems obvious, but realistically how easy would this be for a construction site using standard biometric turnstiles without compromising on any access or security control measures?
Although the report is damming for turnstiles and an obvious worry for those using them on site, there is now a solution that not only solves all the above problems but could also actually save projects hundreds of thousands or pounds in the process.
Because inteliPod is 100% touch-free, there are no contact areas throughout the whole access process. This makes a smooth, efficient and above all safe access procedure. inteliPod utalises facial recognition to determine who is authorised to enter site. This ensures a much safer and robust security control system.
In addition, the inbuilt temperature screening technology ensures anyone entering site has a safe body temperature, which is as we all know by now, is a symptom of Covid-19. If a high temperature alarm is raised, inteliPod’s automatic anti-virus misting technology deploys a fine mist to neturalise all bacteria and viruses on contact. The mist is also deployed at set intervals throughout the day, providing all-round protection for all surfaces. This technology removes the need for extra cleaning staff and therefore, provides significant cost savings.
What is more impressive, inteliPod also has its own Virtual Management Solution (VMS), with a team of highly trained operatives working remotely from IPM’s state-of-the-art control centre. The VMS team provide 24/7 support and deal with 100% off pre-enrolments and inductions, as well as monitoring, managing and handling all critical events, delivery management software to improve delivery efficiency and reduce co2, and automated bespoke reports for site management.
InteliPod really is the all-in-one access system. As a result, it can provide significant savings. In a recent case study, inteliPod has saved one construction firm over £148,000. You can read the full case study here.
It’s clear to see why inteliPod is now becoming the industry standard. For more information, please get in touch with one of our friendly team.
